At SCITEK Consultants, our diverse array of projects frequently involves handling OBJ files (Wavefront object files – Wikipedia), particularly generated through methodologies like photogrammetry—a technology in which we boast significant expertise. Check out our dedicated case studies on our photogrammetry projects here.

A key challenge in working with 3D models, especially OBJ files, lies in facilitating easy sharing without requiring recipients to have specialised software. While many 3D model converters exist, our projects often involve sensitive and IP-restricted data, necessitating a bespoke solution. Recognising this, our skilled engineers crafted an in-house solution from the ground up. This solution seamlessly processes OBJ files, converting them to the U3D file format, and then effortlessly embedding them into PDFs using LaTeX.

Continue reading to discover our insights on converting OBJ files to 3D PDFs and explore their potential applications.

Why convert to 3D PDF?

Simply, to make it easy to share and view with everyone. It removes a barrier so others can easily see your work. This enables all employees at all levels within a company to easily open and view the 3D models without needing to use any specialist software.

Why does it convert to U3D format?

U3D file format is a 3D model file format required so the model can be embedded into a PDF document. LaTeX can easily embed it as a 3D model in your PDF.

Why use LaTeX?

This is free for our clients to download and use. It also gives them the full freedom to create PDF templates to align with internal standards for sharing and storing data.

Why can’t I just use an online converter?

Online converters are a great option but are not necessarily a suitable option for many businesses. Sensitive data might mean the conversion should be carried out locally to prevent data from being compromised. This is why we have seen demand for such a tool.

Can it convert other 3D formats to 3D PDFs?

Currently, it only converts OBJ files as this sees the most demand. We are always evaluating the needs of our customers and will add other 3D file formats as we receive requests.

How can I start using it?

Contact us today so we can assess the suitability of our tool for your application and work with you to make it a bespoke solution for your needs. We plan on packaging the tool into a simple application that will become available in popular app stores. We hope to make it available on the Blender Market soon for convenient integration with Blender, with more stores to follow.
