Blender is an open-source graphics and animations software used in many animated films and games. It is free to use and has a great community of users willing to teach and help others. Head over to Blender Animation studios to see some examples of films produced using Blender. The Blender Open Movie ‘Spring’ provides a fantastic example of the quality of the 3D motion graphics that can be produced using the software.
Engineering applications may not be the first to spring to mind when listing typical uses for Blender. However, the powerful 3D modelling and model texturing tools make it an ideal candidate for viewing and editing meshed models. 3D reconstructed models from photogrammetry software can be inputted for manipulation or editing. Model textures and colours can be easily edited, particularly when combined with image analysis algorithms, allowing Design Engineers to use it as a tool for interpreting surface colour and 3D geometry of components.

Looking for a new skill to learn during the ongoing pandemic? We recommend that you give Blender a go and bring out your creative side. Have a go at creating a delicious donut and coffee as SCITEK engineer Paul did when experimenting with the blender interface and functionality by following Blender Guru’s free video tutorial.
